I never knew my father. I was 8 months old when he was killed while fighting the Germans in Europe. To this day, I miss the father I never had. Our war then was legitimate; we had to defend ourselves. The war in Iraq has no legitimacy; it is a massacre. Like millions of Americans and millions around the world, I protest this arrogant invasion. I support the troops, however, and wish for their quick and safe return home. What kind of leadership is one that ignores the low-income families? Must Mr. Bush be applauded for increasing our federal debt while punishing the ones in need, or is it a sign of patriotism to go along with the commander in chief? MONIQUE FRUGIER Ardmore, Pa., May 29, 2003 ****************************************************************************************************************************** Published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, July 6, 2003 Liberty for all I applaud and celebrate the decision of the Supreme Court striking down the Texas sodomy laws (“Sodomy laws felled by court,” June 27). This is a great victory for the gay community. Obviously the dissenters, Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, as well as the social conservatives and religious groups blinded by homophobia, misinterpret the homosexuals’ agenda, which is nothing more than demanding equality, justice and liberty for all. —Monique Frugier, Ardmore ****************************************************************************************************************************** Published in the New York Times, January 29, 2004 To the Editor: Re "Kerry Beats Dean in New Hampshire for a 2nd Victory" (front page, Jan. 28): The message is clear. American voters told the world that the war on Iraq is no longer an issue. They have bought the Bush administration line that Howard Dean is not electable and would be easily defeated by George W. Bush. They have chosen an insider who supported the war on Iraq rather than the one who courageously denounced it and brought a message of hope. John Kerry did not win; George W. Bush did, by succeeding with his politics of fear. The illegitimate war on Iraq should be the No. 1 issue for the presidential election. MONIQUE FRUGIER Ardmore, Pa., Jan. 28, 2004 ****************************************************************************************************************************** Published in The Philadelphia Inquirer "Main Line Voices" June 3, 2004 Presidential debates are always informative and certainly quite entertaining, but they are limited. If I want to know about a candidate, I call his or her headquarters and ask for information about issues important for me. Of course, there are newspapers and radio and television stations, but I learned a long time ago that what I hear or read is not always true. Should I pay attention anyway? You bet. The Internet is a great tool for information, and since candidates have their own sites, I can study issues and subscribe to their newsletters. But I also research past accomplishments, anything that can validate the status of a candidate. I am one of those who judge by what has been done rather than what is being promised. It is not fewer lies and manipulations that I want. I don't want any. I want to see and hear nothing but the truth. Overreacting? What a blow to human sensitivity, to the high standard we always preach to the world! He sends the message that "anything goes" if you support the war. I applaud Michael Moore for his constant determination and his fearless attitude. France, my home country, spoke with me against the war on Iraq. Now I am an American citizen, and Mr. Moore speaks with me against the Bush administration. May the Cannes Film Festival open the doors to a nationwide viewing in the United States.
