Do we need more shrines?
By Monique Frugier (March 2003)

When I was a kid
I learned not to fight, but walk away.
When I became an adult
I learned to speak up, to say no.
When I was a kid, I used to look at the sky
In search of a cloud shaped like a kepi.
I searched for my father I never met.
I was told he was a hero
For he died at war, defending his country.
Surely, he was in heaven.
Surely if I stared long enough at the sky, I would find him -I thought.

I have reached adulthood many years ago
Yet, I still look at the sky and I ask why?
I say NO to war.
I say NO to new monuments to be built  "In memory of"
The missing, we call Heroes.
Fathers, brothers, sisters, mothers, sons, lovers Killed at war
Are not Heroes,
They are tears in the hearts of those left behind.
Do we need more shrines?
